First Run with Mo

Workout: 12M to Mammoth Creek Park

I ran 2M to the park, 8M with Mo, then 2M back to the house. Mo is a marathon pacer for elite women (he is not Mo Farah). We talked for the entire run; combine that with low oxygen content in the air, running at low 7 min pace, and the ups and downs of the trails, by mile 6 I was gasping a little for air which is unusual for me. I believe that over time my body will adapt and become stronger and capable of running faster here in high altitude. Just stay confident and trust the process. Mo is the only other athlete here training for the Chicago Marathon because the two women who I mentioned on Tuesday’s post are injured and will be training here for a marathon later in the year. I did meet one of those women today. In September, Meb Keflezki and Shalane Flanagan will be coming to Mammoth to train for the New York City Marathon and I am ecstatic to meet them! Also, Deena Kastor will be joining the team next week and I just can’t wait to see her again! The first time I met her was at the pre-race dinner for the Los Angeles Marathon. Throughout my run, I passed lots of high school runners, who came here for summer training also. It’s amazing to see so many dedicated runners and cyclists all training in a little town with a population just over 7,000 people; it makes me feel at home.

Later in the evening I went to the Village Plaza to watch a free biweekly movie, this time it was “Dr. Strange” on the outdoor projector. I was wrapped in a warm blanket, enjoying an ice-cream cone and smiling at a little girl as she roasted marshmallows in the firepit with her mother. It sprinkled lightly during the film, as it often dos here in Mammoth in the late afternoon. When I waited in the long line for ice-cream, I talked to a woman who seemed fascinated with my running story and ambitions. I find real happiness and meaning when I inspire others to do what they love, set goals, work hard, and lead healthier, happier lives.
