Meet my new official sponsor, Freshii!! Fastest 22 mi run!
Weekly Mileage: 80 (last week: 80; two weeks ago: 65 - due to being sick)
Exciting news - Freshii, a casual fast food restaurant, is sponsoring me all the way to the Olympics! They will be providing me with free customized meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) every day to fuel my body with fresh, wholesome food! They have 300+ locations in 85 cities in 20 countries, and are growing faster than any other restaurant in the world. And, one just happens to be in Riverside, CA, only a 15 minute drive away! Now I can say goodbye to eating peanut butter from the jar when hunger hits, and canned beans and tuna; being a pharmacy student and marathon training leaves me with no time to cook. There was even a time when I survived only on Honey Bunches of Oats and pea protein powder for 5 days, during finals week of my first quarter at pharmacy school. This opportunity to have meals made with fresh ingredients from Freshii will really impact my training and recovery. I am so thankful!
Here's the story (both unexpected & amazing) on how I became sponsored by Freshii!
Two weeks ago I became sick - fast heart rate, chills, fatigue, and overall lack of energy - it impacted my training to the point where I had to stop multiple times because my heart was pounding like drums and my legs felt like bricks even at an easy pace, and my heart rate was 50 beats faster than usual! And, I had to skip that week's long run (most important workout of the week). Even falling asleep at night was not easy because my heart was pounding. It scared me so much, all the dreadful possibilities of this illness were spinning in my mind! I prayed out to God for some sort of miracle. Then, after a long day of classes, I felt like I was going to faint.
For the next 3 days, thinking that it was due to low iron, I ate an iron rich diet: calf liver, spinach, bell pepper, onion, tomato bisque, and kombucha drink. Then, still feeling sick, I went to urgent care with tears streaming down my face and the doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong. After waiting scared at the hospital all afternoon, my skin turned pale and hunger hit, so I pulled off the freeway and... there was Freshii. I remembered that their bowl of superfoods fueled me the night before the Chicago Marathon. I quickly went inside and ordered. I asked the friendly cashier about their 30 day meal plan (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) and introduced myself as a professional marathon runner, which led to a 20 minute talk with the owner.
It brings tears of joy when I think back on how this wonderful sponsorship came about. God really does see our pain and answer our prayers, even in the worst of times.
Two days after the hospital visit, I was back to normal by eating healthy, without meds. I recently found out that other running friends had the same strange sickness, which I call the "athlete's flu" (less severe due to fitness). The flu has hit almost everyone I know here.
This morning, I ran my fastest ever 22 mile training run in 2:15, which is 6:09 per mile pace with almost 1,000 ft elevation gain and 2,000 calories burned. My goal for the LA Marathon is under 6:00 pace, which is a sub-2:37 marathon and is the A standard qualifying time for the Olympic Marathon Trials (B standard is 2:45 and has less accommodations than the A standard). Yesterday, I ate lunch and dinner at Freshii - 1 wrap for lunch with a smoothie and 2 wraps for dinner with a smoothie. My performance today was fueled by Freshii and with all the excitement about being sponsored by Freshii, including: meals, custom designed race uniform, and having the support of nutritionists for meal planning and marketing with branding and sharing my journey to the Trials on social media.
I hope to inspire others through dedicated training and eating wholesome foods at Freshii that exercise and a healthy diet can really bring the best out of you in mind, body, and spirit!
"Eat. Energize. Fueled by Freshii." That's the
Freshii Mantra.
