Meet Woody Kincaid & Training in Kenya

Workout: 12.5 M at the Meadows

Running through the meadows was just what I needed after a hard workout yesterday. It is the perfect place to just enjoy the run and stop to reflect on life and take in the breathtaking nature all around. I like to do just that on top of a huge rock that oversees the meadows and is surrounded by a rushing stream, pine trees, and mountains.

In the evening, I spent over two hours packing and cleaning up the Crib. I am moving tomorrow back to the house that I stayed at for the first 2 weeks in Mammoth. My roommate, Woody Kincaid, also moved out today. He is a 5 K runner and told me that he trained for 10 weeks in Kenya. He said that the altitude is the same over there as well as the cool weather, and the food is mainly rice, beans, and flour. The runners go out for a run then come back and drink tea and talk while cooking (which takes over 2 hours). I can't imagine not eating for more than 2 hours after a run; I would be starving! Eating a high protein meal soon after a run (half an hour or so) replenishes your body and is important for muscle growth. The runners who have won races live in mansions that cost about $5,000 (in US money), have a maid that costs $2 per day, and get massages. The mansions aren't as nice as they are in the US, but they have all the essentials.

Woody Kincaid - after winning his 5 K Prelims for the 2016 Trials

Woody is a runner for the Bowerman Track Club in Oregon and has a PR of 13:27 for the 5 K and 7:48 for the 3 K. He won his 5 K prelim heat for the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials in 13:27, but he needed a time of 13:25 to make the Olympic standard. He trained in Mammoth for the past few weeks with his teammates. He is focused and working hard to make the next Olympic team and I believe he can do it. He also has a podcast where he interviews his teammates and you can view it here: "Price of a Mile" by Woody Kincaid. His teammates discuss their training, life as a professional runner, and advice.
